Positivity is contagious. I have been through some challenging times in my life but the one thing that has always pulled me through is remaining positive. Whether it is at work or with friends, what I began to notice is that a positive mindset will more often than not lead to positive results and a true passion for whatever it is I have set myself to accomplish. How can this so called “positive energy” serve as an asset whilst seeking a job? How can a positive mindset propel you up the corporate ladder at your workplace? How can a positive attitude help you stand out from the crowd? I am glad you asked.
Elbert Hubbard has said it best, “positive anything is better than a negative nothing.” No one wants to work with a pessimist at work, especially in a team-oriented profession because pessimism, similar to optimism, is highly contagious. On the contrary, everyone would relish the opportunity to work with an optimist rather than a pessimist because what sets the former apart from the latter is the environment that he/she creates for his/her team and clients. An environment where one can learn and thrive and not be afraid to speak up and ask questions. An environment where one can grow and not be afraid of making mistakes. An environment that has always been created for me by family, friends and colleagues at PwC, which in turn has allowed me to truly be myself... and be positive.
Many of you have probably heard me say the following in various recruiting events or through hearing one of my many talks on career development:
If you do not believe in your resume, cover letter, or personal brand, who will? If you do not believe you are good enough to get the job, who will? If you do not believe in yourself, who will? The first step to getting that dream job or promotion is to truly believe you can get it. You must believe that no one deserves it more than you. You must forgo fear and uncertainty and welcome belief and positivity because this is what will make you most memorable. Similar to how an investor will only want to invest in stocks with a “positive return,” a recruiter will only want to invest in a candidate that is both positive and passionate in whatever he/she does.
So how exactly does one become a “positive thinker?” Does it happen overnight? No. Are you born a positive human being? No. Can you learn to become one? Most definitely. Let me share with you three habits of mine which have led me to greater heights in both my professional and personal career as they have allowed me to remain positive through both testing and rewarding times in my life.
I make it a habit to surround myself with positive people... why put yourself in an environment that is not rewarding, encouraging and conducive to your growth? The people that I surround myself with are the people that I strive to become. I was once told, “tell me who your friends are and I will tell you who you are.”
I never let my past failures overshadow future feats... why let your past dictate your future? Why let your past constantly bring you down and de-motivate you from achieving great accomplishments in the future? Let the past be the past and keep your eyes set on your future goals. Learn from your mistakes but never let them hold you back.
I love and have a serious passion for what I do... I have thoroughly enjoyed every single minute I have spent with my team and my clients thus far at PwC. I love what I do because of the people, experiences and opportunities that I have come across at the firm. Find what you love doing and are passionate about because once discovered, there is no reason for you to not be positive!
Oprah will leave you with the final words of this blog post, “the greatest discovery of all time is that a person can change his future by merely changing his attitude.”
